2006 marks the 10 year anniversary of the first Once Hush CD,
"Say It Anyway."
It seems appropriate to commemorate this event with everyone associated with the band; the musicians, family, supporters, press, and extended families. We, formerly, Fine Tune Management, invite all those who were involved with, or affected by, the band's positive force to share your memories and thoughts in an effort to reconnect with the special spirit of the band and its following.
For me, it was a ton of pressure. I regret that there was not enough of me to go around; that those near to me were not able to really know the person behind the management face. I remember every 4:00 AM crisis when the band was on the road. I remember my kids telling me that I was always working. I remember the discord and the strain of a too-tight budget. But, also, there were the guys, college kids, who could not make a cup of coffee. The guys who looked at me like starving children when we arrived in Morgantown, in the middle of a blizzard with 2 pans of home-made lasagna that really, I could not afford to make and yet, could not do otherwise. Thanks for the company during the rise, Sue.
I am not much of a socializer. I am a thinker, like my son, Adam. He, though, is brilliant and remembers the OH guys with great love.
Now, in 2006, I am happy for C. Loren Duffey – now married and, last I heard, residing in NC. I hear he is doing very well in the real estate market (no surprise there)! Loren could nail a solo like Neal Peart. I really miss those sticks, kid! I still have the shrapnel to remind me of those days!
I am happy for Allen, who has married our determined and faithful Trish, and whose keys could make me cry one minute and dance like I was 10 years younger than my drivers license says in the next. Such rare talent. I hope his children know the Allen I was privileged to know. I hope his kids know what a special and extremely rare talent their Dad possesses. I will always remember John Alagia watching for my reaction when you guys finished "Breathing Opera." I remember the audacity with which I told John he better not screw up my favorite song! I can still see that tiny room where we mixed the CD and remember hearing for the first time your unforgettable keys. I can still see how John’s eyes met mine and the questioning look he gave me until he saw the tears in my eyes and knowingly smiled.
I am happy for Eric who finally married our dear, patient Heather and has moved back to his home in WV. I will never forget your wide-eyed amazement when you came to Baltimore at the age of 18. I will never forget the way you shook off the cramp in your hand after playing “Say It Anyway,” a song that still remains as my second favorite OH tune. You and Loren dropped many a jaw of would-be musicians in various rhythm sections! For me, your talent was also linked to your quiet leadership qualities. They did not go unnoticed. I cherish the memories. Thank you for your patience and for making, “Heroes and Frozen Ghosts” an unforgettable memory. I hope your voice and lyrics will live on for a long time through Eric Lewis Music. We may surprise you one day…
I am happy for our zen-like Greg White, who walked on stage and then knocked us all out with the power of his leads. I hope you will teach your son to play like that and to enjoy the sheer magic of music the way you did. (Have you seen School of Rock?) We miss you, Greg, and wish you and Laura much happiness!
I guess, most of all, I hope that GR thinks of those times with joy. You were always enormously special to me, the kid brother I never had, though my position prevented me from telling you so. I pray for you and hope that you will find the joy in life to match the joy you have given others through your gift of voice, guitar and determination. Sometimes, extraordinary talent seems like a curse, or at the very least, a burden, doesn't it? Sometimes, our worst enemy lies within. I will love and miss you always.
As for those who supported OH, I would like to say Thank You - to Janet and Doug, to Jason B (how did you put up with me?), Gary, Ryan, Tim, Roger and a million others. Angel – I miss you – my truest friend and right hand in the biz of Local Reps. Most of all, I would like to thank my children, Adam, Allison & Stephanie. You, of all, gave the most. You gave of your Mom’s time to the tune of 20 hours a day for 7 years. I recently reread the dedication on "Say It Anyway" and realized once again how much you really gave of yourselves. Whether it was working the merch booth night after night or just missing me there for you, I thank you for allowing me the experience and for your faith in me.
I am proud of you all, your music, your accomplishments and your current successes.
Adam & I now work a farmette in PA, raising organic vegetables, herbs and flowers. We also have 3 chickens and a reptile business. Adam works at the only local deli as a meatcutter in this small picturesque town. I am making major progress on my book and take on marketing gigs that interest me. Allison, now a world traveler (a girl after my own heart!), lives in IN and Steph married Joe and resides in MD, living happily ever after.
We would love to hear what’s up with all of you now! Please feel free to share memories, favorite tunes, pics or anything else. We were a huge family of 10,000 and broke all the rules associated with unsigned bands (health insurance? Pah-leese!). 10 years later, I believe the love and the joy are still there. I thank you, and miss you all, but the music lives on... Happy Anniversary!
Peace,

hi terri and everybody, i'd also like to congratulate the band for making such great music; i remember the first time i heard 'relax rewind' and being blown away; i always look back on my time in the band as very exciting and challenging - for the first time in my life i was on tour outside of my home region, seeing beautiful places like charleston sc, and playing this fun experimental pop music (my joining the band coincided w/greg's departure, i regretted not having the opportunity to work w/greg but found a home in eric's writing); there was a lot going on behind the scenes in my personal life: i was in a commited relationship and struggling w/a mild form of epilepsy, which is thankfully now under control; to say the least the band's health insurance came to my rescue more than a few times! anyway, i'm glad to have been associated w/the loving family that was everyone w/in and around the band, i've been living in nashville for the last five years and am loving it, best of luck to all!!
whoooo!!!! 10 YEARS !!!! FINALLY, SOMETHING TO MAKE ME FEEL REALLY OLD...Thanks Terri...Happy Anniversary!!!
It was nice to read your kind words and memories, Terri, of a great period of my life. We're glad to hear that you and the kids are happy and well. I don't get to see the guys very much these days since Laura, our son Jonah, and I have moved to the Boston area. I think of the guys all the time, and we talk by phone or email now and again. Before moving up here, Laura and I had a chance to record some blues music with Eric and Loren (I owe you guys recordings, by the way!), which was a great feeling. Laura and I wrote those songs together and are continuing to write blues (as time permits!). I'm working as a civil engineer and Laura teaches part-time. Laura is also writing a novel (as time permits!) When I think of the time I spent making music and touring, I remember the good times - playing an awesome set at a club, the beautiful scenery on the road, and five friends travelling together. I try to forget the van breaking down, arguments over sandwiches, and playing less-than-awesome sets at a club! Though, when we get together, we do reminisce about some of those times too! I can still pick up my Telecaster and play through some Once Hush tunes. Thankfully, I haven't forgotten everything in my old age! Happy Anniversary!
Imagine being married thirteen years, then separated for eight hours when you first hear, "Things Left Behind."
So, I bought "say it Anyway" and become, kind of a working groupie, helping to load the van at 2:00 AM, and taking lots of photos at shows in DC, Atlantic City, Vintage VA, Columbia MD,etc. I still miss 'em. And still have lots of pics to give to Eric, when my West virginia passport arrives.
take care,
Dana
Send me those pics when you get the chance Dana...I'd love to see them...
I don't believe you need a passport to get into WV...The only requirement is that you must have, at least once in your life, rubbed snuff...
Greg White recently sent me a CD of a live show down in Charlotte, NC at Jack Straw's...I had forgotten how tight we were(musically speaking of course)...
I got a chance to see Loren and Alan a couple of weeks ago and Loren has a buttload of old video footage...here's a question, do you guys think "the purple shirt" made me look fat...?
Wow, 10 years! How time flies! Although I was not around in the very beginning and was for the most part 600 miles away, Once Hush was and still is a very important part of my life. Who would the "Charleston Girls" have been with out our faithful friends from Baltimore? You guys made my years in Charleston some of the best years of my life and helped me to make some of my closest friends as well as bringing all of us Charleston girls together. Robin and I didn't even know each other that well when we made our first road trip to Virginia to see a OH show!! Thank you, Teri, for bring 5 wonderful guys together! Thank you, Mrs. K, for the home cooked meals when we were poor college students who just spent our last $50 on gas to get us to Maryland. And for giving us a place on the floor to sleep when necessary. Ryan, Jason, Alan, Loren, "Whitey", Eric, Bob, and Greg, thank you for making us who we are today. I will never foget dragging Eric and Alan to class with Stacia and I just so that they could suffer along with us after a long night of partying! Even though most of us have grown up and gone our seperate ways, you guys will always have a place in my heart! Congrats on 10 years of bringing people together with your music! I will never forget you all! Hugs and kisses!
send me some pics of the old days. send a few at a time if by email, or send a CD to my PO box.
You guys were my favorite band back in those days. I miss Once Hush. -- Bryan Stealey
Hell, you guys, 10 years isn't so much time. Look at Paul McCarty! Didn't you know? When you pass 40, you start getting younger??? Love to hear from more of you all. Dana! Thanks for getting my son drunk on his 21st b-day (He actually remembers.) Bryan - you are a great buzz machine! Let's find some other folks, huh? I miss everyone!
Terri
IN MEMORY OF GARY WEINER
Dear Gary,
We commemorate your passing and yet....not. A tragic death to those of us among the living, and yes, there is a pang in our hearts - each time that we look at one of your magnificent photos of Once Hush. You, Gary, are a true artist, a brilliant man who lent your light to the light of our Once Hush world and family. You, with your ever present Bill (we miss you!). You, with your trench coat and outrageous Russian hat! You with your hugs and stories and ongoing stack of photos from the last show. I do not believe the world is a bit more dim since you have left us. But rather, that you, in perfection, are watching all of us, who shared your love of great music and performance. You, who are smiling down at us every time a van breaks down -a musician's guardian angel. I thank you for being so open about your illness and for sharing information on your Bi-Polar disease as if you were mentioning the weather. You had the courage to discuss the issue openly. I thank you for your big, honest hugs when my daughter was diagnosed and for recommending the book, "A Brilliant Madness." It helped. You always did seem to have a good suggestion or two. We love you now and always will. Watch over me and those we both love. - Terri
I only had the privilege to see one Once Hush show in the time they were together, at a dive bar that's long since closed in Elon, NC, but I remember it fondly [ I think I still have the DAT from that night if anyone's interested in an upload or something, and thanks to the OH folks for being cool about fan recording ]. Honestly, despite all the years since then, I find OH one of the bands that gets regular rotation in my iPhone, to this day in 2010. It's great music, well written and played by people who loved making and crafting it. I miss the new material and wish everyone well in their lives post-OH. I see that in my old friends from Everything who continue to make great stuff whether it's families, or music, or both... Here's to music! Long may it live, and hard may it rock!
